The Foundational Learning Imperative
Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) is widely recognized as the cornerstone of all future learning. When a child fails to attain foundational reading proficiency by Grade 3, their ability to navigate subsequent curricular stages is severely compromised. In late 2025, our team partnered with district educational authorities across 340 primary schools to implement a structured, competency-based FLN intervention.
The goal was ambitious: achieve an 80%+ baseline reading fluency and grade-level comprehension among Grade 3 learners within a single academic year.
Diagnostic Benchmarking & Adaptive Interventions
The journey began with individualized oral reading assessments (EGRA) to map student competencies across phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension. The diagnostics revealed significant variance: while many learners possessed basic letter recognition, over 58% struggled with connected text fluency and inference-based questioning.
To bridge this gap, EKSAQ introduced an adaptive, bilingual classroom toolkit that integrated:
- Daily 45-minute structured literacy blocks focused on systematic phonics and leveled readers.
- Multilingual scaffolding bridging mother-tongue dialects with standard instructional languages.
- Formative continuous tracking enabling teachers to identify struggling learners weekly rather than waiting for term-end examinations.
Empowering Primary Educators
No educational transformation succeeds without investing deeply in educators. We conducted continuous, experiential capacity-building workshops for over 680 primary school teachers, focusing on active pedagogy, multi-grade classroom management, and remedial group strategies.
Teachers transitioned from conventional rote-recitation to interactive storytelling, word games, and guided reading circles. The shift created vibrant learning environments where children actively engaged with print materials daily.
Key Project Outcomes
- 184.2% Mastery: Grade 3 students reading with grade-appropriate fluency increased from 41.6% to 84.2% across the pilot cohort.
- 2Reduced Learning Gaps: Remedial interventions cut the percentage of critical-need learners by more than half within 6 months.
- 3Teacher Confidence: Over 92% of surveyed educators reported greater clarity in tracking and remediating foundational gaps.
